  2. IIMSAM pleads for unified strategy on world hunger and malnutrition issues while observing world food day ( October 16, 2009)

IIMSAM Middle East Director & Goodwill Ambassador Dr. Naseer Homoud’ message on World Food Day. Dr. Naseer Homoud calls upon the world for unified approach for fighting world hunger amid this financial crisis ridden period.

In the contemporary world where 1.02 billion people are hungry and almost 16,000 children losing their battles to live every day, nothing can be more serious issue than to deal with world hunger. The pace with which the human civilization is developing is somewhat contradicting the its core and basic values- the right to feed is the most important right of every individual and the hunger ridden people are our fellow human being- at by this virtue they deserves to be fed under any adverse circumstances.

Speaking on the methodology of fighting world hunger and undernourishment related issues Dr. Naseer said “efforts must be compartmentalized from all corners to render support for the organizations working for fighting these hazards, NGO’s and IGO’s should be provided with support from governments, related autonomous organizations as well as from individuals since without involving common people in such project success cannot be targeted”. Dr. Naseer further pledged to support solidarity campaigns carried by the United Nations including a number of initiatives such as national or regional Food Security programmes, cultural and sporting events held to promote development of agriculture, nutrition and the environment. “Helping to alleviate rising prices, while reducing the pressures on land and water resources means that agriculture must become ever more productive, efficient and sustainable,” added Dr. Naseer.

Recognizing ageing as one of the major achievements, and at the same time, challenges of contemporary world, the UN General Assembly in 1990 designated October 1 to be marked as International Day of Older Peoples (IDOP).

The UN estimates that, globally, one out of every ten persons is now 60 years or above; by 2050, one out of five will be 60 years or older; and by 2150, one out of three persons will be 60 years or older. "The theme for 2009 is a reminder that human dignity and value must be at the centre of our focus," said Dr. Naseer Homoud “Experience shows that there are few instruments that are as effective at ensuring the basic security and dignity of older persons as universal social security health and pension schemes, in both developed and developing countries."

  4. IIMSAM official observed UN Universal Children Day (November 20, 2009)

IIMSAM Middle East Director & Goodwill Ambassador Dr. Naseer Homoud’ message on UN Universal Children Day. Dr. Naseer Homoud urged the community to stand with children basic rights so that the future assets are preserved.

November 20 is Universal Children's Day - a day to promote the plight of children worldwide and commemorate all of the world's youngest citizens. Every year thousands of children are subjected to torture. Children in conflict and post-conflict areas are at particularly high risk, but also street children in the slums of large cities around the world are routinely detained and tortured and are left to fight with hunger and malnutrition. This 20 November, IIMSAM urges all states to reinforce their efforts to protect these highly vulnerable groups against torture and all other forms of ill-treatment and to ensure that every child is supplied with his most fundamental right- the right to live.

Dr. Homoud further said “On this day, the IIMSAM urges all states to ratify and implement the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its Optional Protocols, as well as the UN Convention against Torture and its Optional Protocol. IIMSAM also calls on all states to fully cooperate with the Committee on the Rights of the Child. With the help of these instruments states shall take all necessary measures to protect our most vulnerable citizens from torture, ill-treatment and other forms of violence and exploitation, to bring the perpetrators to justice and to grant children full reparation, in order to ensure that human rights also are children’s rights”.

Over the past year, IIMSAM teamed up on several occasions with other welfare organizations for instance in Qatar, to provide humanitarian relief to children and families in regions affected by freak weather conditions and earthquakes. Dr. Homoud while addressing the media said “ children are our assets and we have to preserve this most valuable assets- onus is on present generation to leave no stones unturned to protect childhood from unwarranted affairs.”

While addressing the gathering Dr. Homoud urged “this year, in a continuing effort to protect our children against a manmade disaster - violence against children – we have to ensure that each and every child on this world of plenty is not left with his basic amenities most importantly food”.
